For Gertrude, the annual literary arts journal of Gertrude Press
Gertrude accepts manuscripts from new and established writers and artists. Subject matter need not be LGBTQA-specific and we welcome writers and artists from all backgrounds. We accept simultaneous submissions with notification. We do not accept previously published work. Please note that we do not publish novels. We read chapbook manuscripts ONLY through our annual competition.
Response time is nine to twelve months and varies based on when the submission was received.
Submitters will be signed up for our quarterly eNews that outlines submission opportunities, events, new programs and more. We respect your preference and if you wish to opt-out, please let us know.
Poetry
Submit up to six poems of any subject matter. There is no line limit; however, poems less than 60 lines are preferable.
Fiction
Fiction/Novel Excerpts*: Submit one to two pieces, double-spaced, up to 3000 words, of any subject matter. Include a word count for each piece in your cover letter.Please note that Gertrude Press does not publish novels at this time.
Creative Non-Fiction

Art
Gertrude showcases one visual artist per issue, including full-color cover and six to eight black and white images inside the journal. Please upload images or include links to website URLs in your submissions. We are interested in video that supports and gives deeper/other meaning to the text. These can be video-poems, text-driven animations, spoken memoirs with supporting images and audio, or any combination! Text can be spoken or displayed. Images should be owned by the author or public domain.We will be looking at submissions to see how the author uses media to further the literary strength of his or her piece. Entries should not exceed 5 minutes. Selected pieces will be featured on our website, on Facebook, and in our e-newsletter. Credit for the work will be given in the Contributors section of the print edition of Gertrude. Two copies of that issue will be sent to the author of the selected video piece.
